Why trade Futures?
Futures provide global access to highly regulated, exchange-traded and liquid markets. Futures have a long and well-established history. The first ever standardized ‘exchange traded’ grains forward contracts were listed on the Chicago Board of Trade in 1864. Financial futures were introduced in 1972. In 2015 over 15 billion futures contracts were traded. The majority are traded on electronic exchanges.
Profit Opportunity
By their nature, Futures markets offer a sustainable profit opportunity. They transfer risk from hedgers to speculators. Thus speculators assume the price risk in return for a possibility of profits. Futures can provide leverage. Traders post a margin, typically 5%-10% of the contract’s value. A good-faith deposit held to cover the day-to-day obligations of maintaining the position. Short selling is permitted.
